What does js mean?
- 1.
Just saying: Tagged onto the end of an opinion, a piece of advice, or an awkward truth: no offence, I'm only pointing it out. It can be gentle or pointed, and the sentence before it decides which. Also used as a hashtag, #js.
- 2.
Just: In fast lowercase texting, js also stands in for the plain word "just": "i js got home," "js ignore him." Mid-sentence is the tell, because "just saying" makes no sense there.
- 3.
Not JavaScript: In programming, JS is the standard short name for the JavaScript language and its .js files. It has nothing to do with the texting tag.
Js does one job with two faces. At the end of a message it means "just saying": here is my opinion, and I'm not trying to start anything. "Charge your phone before the concert, js" is friendly advice with a disclaimer attached. The disclaimer is the point. It tells the reader the words are an observation, not an attack.
The same two letters can sharpen instead of soften. After a pointed remark, js reads as passive-aggressive, the text version of a raised eyebrow. "You did leave the group chat on read for three days, js" is not an apology. The words before the tag set the tone, so read the whole message.
Mid-sentence, js is something else: a fast way to type "just." In "js wanted to check on u," it can't mean "just saying," so its position gives it away. Both uses are recorded, the "just saying" tag and an abbreviation of the plain word "just".
Don't mix it up with jk. Jk, "just kidding," takes a statement back. Js stands by it. "You're wrong, jk" retracts. "You're wrong, js" does not. It also sits apart from the honesty words. No cap and fr vouch that something is true, while js vouches that you mean no harm.
It's casual shorthand for texts and comment sections. In a work email, write the words out, or skip the disclaimer.
Where did js come from?
Js shortens "just saying," itself clipped from "I'm just saying." The spoken tag is much older than texting. The defensive "I'm just saying" turns up in novels of the 1930s, and again in Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day (1989).
The catchphrase version, "just sayin'," rose sharply in the 1990s, popularized by comedians like Eddie Murphy and Paul Reiser, who spread it rather than coined it. By 2011 it had landed on Lake Superior State University's list of banished words, a reliable sign of overuse.
The two-letter spelling came with instant messaging and texting. Urban Dictionary entries record js for "just" by 2004 and for "just saying" by 2007, which shows the spellings were in use, though not where they started. Dictionary.com added js to its acronym guide in 2018, citing #js posts. No citable source dates the first use, so the exact origin of the abbreviation is unclear.
