Internet & Meme Slang Words
Slang born in memes and forums. Each entry explains where a term started, what it means now, and how seriously people mean it.
Words the internet invented for itself: forum in-jokes, meme formats, reaction words, and shorthand. That shorthand makes online conversation feel like a private language until you learn it. This is the deepest archive on the site, because internet slang has been piling up since the days of dial-up internet. Terms like based and lurk were used on forums long before the platforms they now thrive on existed.
The defining trait of this category is mutation: the words keep changing. A word starts out sincere. Then people use it ironically, then post-ironically, a stage where the joke is about the joke itself. Eventually the layers are the point. That makes internet slang genuinely hard to read from the outside. It is also why each entry here spells out tone. A term can be a compliment, an insult, or depend entirely on who is typing it.
Origins get named specifically: an image board, a subreddit, a Twitch emote, a copypasta. When the trail is cold, the entry says "exact origin unclear" instead of inventing a tidy story. That is because half the word-origin stories passed around online are wrong, and repeating them spreads the mistake.
