Ghosting is ending a relationship by disappearing. One day the replies stop, and that silence is the whole message. What separates it from an ordinary breakup is the missing explanation. The person left behind gets no reason, no closure, and no answer to the question of what went wrong.

The word covers more than romance. Friends ghost friends. Job candidates ghost employers, and employers ghost applicants right back. The pattern is the same in every case: contact ends without warning, and following up changes nothing.

It is worth separating from its neighbours. Breadcrumbing keeps you hanging with occasional replies that lead nowhere. Ghosting at least ends things, even if it ends them badly. There is also soft ghosting, where someone likes your message but never actually replies, letting the conversation die politely.

One thing the word is not: new. The screen sense of ghosting is a century old. Only the dating meaning is recent.

The exact origin of the dating sense is unclear, and no coiner is documented. Claims that it started on Tinder do not hold up, because the records predate Tinder by years.

The earliest record still viewable is an Urban Dictionary entry from 2004. By 2006 the behaviour was tied to instant messaging, where people set their status to invisible and let conversations die, a detail Merriam-Webster's editors noted when they tracked the word. By October 2014 the polling firm YouGov was measuring ghosting by name, and found roughly one American in ten admitted doing it.

The year 2015 made it mainstream. Celebrity coverage, most famously the reports that Charlize Theron had ghosted Sean Penn, pushed the word into every outlet, and Collins English Dictionary added it that year. There is also an older precursor worth crediting honestly: in early 1990s hip-hop, "I'm ghost" already meant "I'm leaving." That use is documented, but no dictionary connects it directly to the dating sense, so it stands as an ancestor in spirit rather than a proven source.
