Breadcrumbing names a specific gap: the attention is real, but the intent is not. A person who breadcrumbs you replies, likes your posts, and sends the odd message that reads like interest. What never arrives is a plan, a label, or a straight answer.

That gap is what makes it hard to walk away from. Clinicians describe the pattern as intermittent reinforcement, the same mechanism that keeps people at a slot machine. Rewards that come at random hold attention better than rewards that come every time, so a reply once a fortnight can hook harder than a steady one.

It is worth separating from its neighbours. Ghosting is silence, and silence at least gives you an answer. Breadcrumbing keeps the line open, which is why people stay in it for months.

One honest caveat. This is a popular term, not a clinical one. Psychologists who write about it say plainly that it is not an official diagnosis, and research into it is young. It describes a behaviour well; it does not diagnose anyone.

The exact origin is unclear, and no coiner is documented. What is documented is when the dating sense shows up. The earliest dated record is an Urban Dictionary entry from 26 October 2010, defining it as sending flirtatious but non-committal messages without much effort. Those dates are user-supplied, so it marks the earliest record rather than the first use.

The word itself is far older than the dating sense. The Oxford English Dictionary has an entry for breadcrumbing from 1854, meaning to coat food in breadcrumbs. So only the dating meaning is new here.

The term reached a wider audience in early 2017, when several outlets covered it as a dating trend within a fortnight of each other.

Every source explains the name the same way, through the trail of crumbs in Hansel and Gretel. That reading is obvious and probably right, but no dictionary or etymological authority documents it, so it belongs in the entry as the standard explanation rather than as a proven derivation.
