What does goated mean?

  1. 1.

Elite, top tier: Built from GOAT, greatest of all time. Goated calls a player, a play, a meal or a song as good as it gets. It's looser than GOAT: a burrito can be goated without being the best ever made.

  2. 2.

Goated with the sauce: The emphatic form. Sauce means flair or talent, so goated with the sauce is elite and stylish with it.

  3. 3.

Not the other goat: In older sports writing, lowercase "the goat" was the player who blew the game, a scapegoat. Rarely, goated even meant made the scapegoat. Capitals and context tell you which.

Goated turns a title into a grade. GOAT, greatest of all time, is a noun you give one person, whoever wins the argument that week. Goated is the adjective, and it spreads the honor around. A player who drops forty points is goated. So is the taco truck by your job, your road-trip playlist, and the friend who remembered everyone's order.

That looseness is the point. Nobody claims the burrito is the greatest meal in history. Goated means elite, top tier, as good as this kind of thing gets. It's plain praise, without the irony that can hang off peak or tuff. "Goated with the sauce" is the emphatic form, sauce meaning flair or talent.

It lives in sports talk, gaming chat and everyday texts. A clutch round in a shooter gets "bro is goated," and a single "goated" works as a whole reply. You'll see it spelled goated, GOATed and GOATED, all the same word.

One trap is older than the slang. In sports writing, lowercase "the goat" was the player who blew the big game, the scapegoat. The capitals, and the context, keep the two apart.

Where did goated come from?

Goated is GOAT plus -ed, and GOAT runs through Muhammad Ali. Ali called himself the Greatest, and in 1992 his wife Lonnie Ali incorporated G.O.A.T. Inc. to manage his name. Hip-hop took the acronym mainstream. LL Cool J's 2000 album G.O.A.T. was his first number one, and he credited Ali in a 2016 interview. Sports media spent the next two decades arguing over who deserved the title. Merriam-Webster added GOAT to its dictionary in 2018, with its oldest quotation from a 1996 basketball fan forum.

The adjective grew out of athletes' own talk. It was in print by 2017, when Sports Illustrated quoted Paul George praising Russell Westbrook, and in 2021 an NFL linebacker told ESPN that Lamar Jackson was "GOATed." From there it spread through gaming chat and social media. Nothing shows that gaming or TikTok invented it, and the exact first coinage is unclear.
