Aura is what you have when you are impressive without visibly trying. It is mostly a compliment, and the trying part matters: the moment effort shows, the aura is gone. That is the joke inside "aura farming," the label for someone performing coolness on purpose. Calling someone an aura farmer means they are trying too hard. "Negative aura" flips the compliment: someone whose whole energy reads as awkward or off. The word borrows the older sense of a glowing energy field around a person, but nobody scoring aura points is talking about crystals.

The points version is self-deprecating comedy as much as praise. People narrate their own disasters ("dropped my phone on my face, minus 4,000 aura") and hand out made-up scores to friends, athletes and fictional characters. By 2025 brands and adults had picked the word up, and teens treat that as its own aura loss. It still gets said daily; it is just no longer proof of being early.

Aura is an ordinary English word, traced by Oxford back to a Greek word for breath or breeze. The slang life started around 2020, when sports fans used it for athletes whose presence carried games, in viral clips of players like Calvin Johnson and Luka Doncic. Anime fandom fed it too: in battle anime, powerful characters literally glow with an aura, and early "aura farming" posts were about anime characters. The points format broke out on TikTok in May 2024 and grew past 107 million posts of people scoring everyday wins and fails. The American Dialect Society shortlisted aura in its 2024 word-of-the-year voting. In 2025, "aura farming" went further and became a finalist for Oxford's Word of the Year. An Indonesian boy's boat-dancing video drove that phrase to its peak that July. He did not coin it; it was already circulating. It just never had a bigger moment.
