icl
[ eye-see-EL ] /ˌaɪ ˌsi ˈɛl/ (said letter by letter, or as I can't lie)
abbreviation
Icl is texting slang for "I can't lie," flagging an honest opinion or a mild confession. It works like ngl or tbh: "icl that fit is hard."
icl has 3 meanings. Jump to: [I can't lie] [Slang-overload filler] [Not the eye lens]
type abbreviation since 2019 seen on texting, tiktok, snapchat, instagram, twitter-x status current
Can you still say it?
icl is current: in active, unremarkable use. Safe to say right now.
What does icl mean?
- 1.
I can't lie: Marks what follows, or what came before, as your candid opinion or admission. Often reluctant praise or a small confession: "icl that fit is hard," "i didn't study icl."
- 2.
Slang-overload filler: In a late-2024 TikTok meme, icl was stacked with a pile of other abbreviations into deliberately unreadable walls of text. There it is part of the joke, not a real honesty marker.
- 3.
Not the eye lens: In eye surgery, ICL is an implantable collamer lens, placed inside the eye to correct nearsightedness. That is the sense behind "icl eyes" searches.
Icl is a small confession stamp. It tells the reader that what follows is your real opinion, even when it costs you something to say. "Icl that fit is hard" is praise you didn't want to give. "Icl I haven't opened the group project doc" is an admission you would rather not make.
It goes at the start or the end of a sentence, and the end is where it feels most natural: "the dumplings were elite icl." Read aloud, people say the words, "I can't lie," rather than the letters.
It is a close cousin of ngl and tbh. Ngl, "not gonna lie," is the older and more widespread version. Tbh, "to be honest," often softens a criticism. Icl tends to introduce grudging praise or a confession, and it reads as the newer spelling of the same idea. Next to fr, which insists something is true, icl admits something true about you.
One warning. Some explainer sites claim icl means "I care less." That is a mix-up with iccl, "I couldn't care less," and nobody uses icl that way. If someone texts icl, they are being honest, not dismissive.
Where did icl come from?
Icl is an initialism of the everyday spoken hedge "I can't lie." The exact origin of the abbreviation is unclear. The earliest dated use on record is a tweet from December 23, 2019, which already puts icl at the end of a clause. An Urban Dictionary entry from November 2018 defines it too.
It spread through Snapchat and TikTok in the early 2020s, with press explainers by 2023. In late 2024 it trended in TikTok memes and was folded into a slang-overload trend that stacked it with other abbreviations into deliberately unreadable strings. Commentary tied some of those other abbreviations to African American Vernacular English, but no source makes that claim for icl itself. Demand kept growing. In a study of early 2025 Google data, it was the second most-searched confusing text slang in Texas.

- I can't lie. It flags an honest opinion or a small confession: "icl that fit is hard." It can go at the start or the end of a sentence.
- Does icl mean "I care less"?
- No. That claim comes from a mix-up with iccl, "I couldn't care less." In real use, icl means "I can't lie" and marks honesty, not indifference.

- All three flag honesty. Ngl is the older, more widespread version. Tbh often softens a criticism. Icl is the newer spelling and usually comes with reluctant praise or a confession.

- What does ICL mean in eye surgery?
- An implantable collamer lens: a thin lens placed inside the eye, between the iris and the natural lens, to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. It has nothing to do with the slang.

- React to what they admitted, not to the letters. If it's praise, take it. If it's a confession, "fr" or "same" works. Nobody expects a reply to the icl itself.
