What does iykyk mean?
- 1.
Inside reference: Added to a post, caption or text to mark an inside joke, a shared experience or a niche reference. People who get it will get it, and nobody is going to explain it to the rest.
- 2.
A coy wink: Sometimes the same tag hints at something risque without saying it, especially in TikTok captions. The reader fills in the blank.
- 3.
Said out loud: Spoken, it's the full phrase, "if you know, you know": some things can't be explained to people who haven't lived them.
Iykyk is a velvet rope. Post a blurry photo of a gas station with "iykyk" and you are telling everyone who has eaten the cheese bread there that you are one of them. Everyone else gets a closed door, politely.
The fun is in the exclusion. It works for hometown spots, school traditions, a show's legendary episode, a group chat's running joke, or a childhood experience a whole generation shares. The tag says the reference is real and that explaining it would ruin it. It's a gentle cousin of the urge to gatekeep: nothing is withheld, the reference just isn't explained.
That also makes it easy to misuse. Stick iykyk on something everyone knows and it reads as trying too hard. Use it on something only three people understand and it reads as a riddle nobody asked for. The sweet spot is a reference a good share of your audience will recognize.
On TikTok it sometimes works as a wink instead, hinting at something risque without spelling it out. The video around it usually makes that obvious.
It's the opposite of icymi, which shares news with people who missed it. And it differs from iykwim, "if you know what I mean," which asks you to work out a hint. Iykyk doesn't ask you to work anything out. You know or you don't.
Where did iykyk come from?
The spoken phrase came first, and no citable source dates it. The acronym has been used on social media since at least 2009, with use growing in the mid-2010s.
In 2018 the phrase had a high-profile hip-hop moment. "If You Know You Know" is the opening track of Pusha T's 2018 album Daytona, about a life only insiders fully understand. Many explainers say the song pushed the phrase into the mainstream. The timing fits, but no reliable source documents that effect.
The hashtag became popular on Twitter, TikTok and Instagram in 2019, and by March 2020 it was suddenly everywhere on Twitter, in class-of-2020 and quarantine jokes. It has since become standard caption shorthand, and Cambridge now lists IYKYK as an abbreviation used on social media and in texts.
