What does mid mean?
Mid is dismissal by shrug. Calling something bad grants it the dignity of a strong reaction; calling it mid refuses even that. It lands hardest on things other people hype: the blockbuster sequel, the chart-topping album, the viral restaurant with a line out the door. Common shapes include "so mid," "certified mid" and "the most mid movie of the year." Wrestling fans hear an extra wink in it, since a "midcarder" is a wrestler stuck in the middle of the card.
Aimed at things, it is casual and everywhere. Aimed at a person, especially their looks, it is genuinely mean rather than playful. The word is fully mainstream now: Merriam-Webster added it in 2023, and it has settled into everyday vocabulary across gaming, music and sports arguments rather than fading with its meme moment.
Where did mid come from?
Mid grew out of 2000s cannabis vocabulary, where "mids" meant mid-grade weed, the shelf between cheap and top quality. Crowd dictionaries record that sense by 2004. Through the 2010s it broadened into a general put-down in hip-hop talk and Black online spaces. By July 2021, NPR could call a Jack Harlow verse "mid at best" without explaining the word. The breakout came on September 8, 2021, on AEW Dynamite. Wrestler MJF told a Cincinnati crowd it is called the Midwest "because every single thing in it is mid." The clip became a huge TikTok sound and pushed the word into everyone's vocabulary. MJF did not invent it; he supercharged a word that already had years of use behind it. Merriam-Webster added mid to the dictionary in September 2023.

Gen Z Slang WordsQuestions about mid
- Is mid an insult?
- A mild one. About a movie or a meal it is a casual "nothing special." Aimed at a person, especially their appearance, it stops being playful and reads as genuinely rude.
- Did MJF invent the word mid?
- No. His 2021 "everything in the Midwest is mid" speech made it go viral. But the word already had years of use in hip-hop talk and online, and crowd dictionaries record it back in the 2000s.
- Is mid short for something?
- Yes, it is short for "mid-grade." In 2000s slang, "mids" meant average weed. The word later grew to cover anything that fails to impress.
