nerf is a classic: old, stable, and understood by just about everyone. Safe to say, and likely always will be.

What does nerf mean?

  1. 1.

Weaken (gaming): To make a character, weapon, item or strategy less powerful, usually through a developer's balance patch: "they nerfed the sniper." Also nerfed, as an adjective.

  2. 2.

A weakening: As a noun, the change itself: "the Akali nerf," "the sword got a big nerf this patch."

  3. 3.

Make anything worse: Outside games, to weaken or limit anything: a phone plan, a perk, a policy. "My data plan got nerfed."

  4. 4.

Not the toy, not racing: Nerf is also Hasbro's foam-toy brand, the source of the slang. Motor racing has an unrelated older nerf, a light bump between cars.

Nerf is what players say when a game takes something away. A weapon that dominated every match gets its damage cut in the next patch. That weapon got nerfed. The opposite is a buff, and patch notes are mostly lists of nerfs and buffs, which is why players read them like court rulings.

It's a developer's tool for balance. When one character or strategy wins too often, the game stops being fun, so the studio nerfs it. The players who loved it complain, the players who lost to it celebrate, and the argument repeats every season. "Did they nerf my main, or am I just bad now?" is one of gaming's eternal questions, and sometimes the honest answer is a skill issue.

The word has escaped the games. Outside them, to nerf something is to arbitrarily limit or reduce the capability of it. Think of an "unlimited" data plan that slows after 5GB, or a perk a company quietly cuts.

It sits beside the other patch-note words. A debuff is a temporary penalty during play, a rework redesigns something, and a nerf just makes it weaker.

Where did nerf come from?

Gaming nerf borrows the name of the Nerf foam toys, introduced in 1969. The first established use of the term in games was in Ultima Online, the online role-playing game released by Electronic Arts in 1997. Its lead designer, Raph Koster, later wrote that the word entered online gaming vocabulary because of UO. The developers had weakened swords, and players complained it felt like hitting each other with foam-toy swords.

By 2002 the word was established enough for The New York Times to explain it. A story about another online game, Anarchy Online, glossed it as making something drastically less effective. From early online role-playing games it spread to every game that ships balance patches. The exact date of the first gaming use is unclear. Late 1990s, in Ultima Online, is as precise as the evidence allows.
