What does scran mean?
- 1.
Food, a meal: Informal British and Irish word for food: "proper scran," "get some scran in." It once implied scraps or rough food. Today it is neutral to approving, and often means hearty, unfussy food.
- 2.
To eat: As a verb, to eat, usually fast or with enthusiasm: "scranned the lot," "scranning a kebab."
- 3.
Forces food: Long-standing army and navy slang for rations. In the Royal Navy, the scran bag is the store for lost or confiscated property.
- 4.
Not an acronym: The claim that it stands for sultanas, currants, raisins and nuts is a myth. The word is on record from the 1720s.
Scran is food, said with appetite. "Proper scran" is high praise for a meal that is hot, generous and unpretentious: a chippy tea, a pie at the football, a full plate after a long shift. Nobody calls a tasting menu scran, unless they're joking.
As a verb it means to eat, usually fast. "Scranned a whole pizza at 1am." "Scran it back." The energy is the same: hungry, happy, not counting.
You'll hear it most in Scotland, the north of England, Ireland and the armed forces. From there it has spread through football culture and food videos to younger speakers across Britain, and a whole online genre rates the food sold at stadiums under the name.
One thing has changed. Older dictionaries gloss scran as inferior food or scraps, and that was once true. Today the word is warm. If someone says the scran was unreal, they loved it.
It pairs with bussin. Scran is the food, and bussin is the verdict.
Where did scran come from?
Scran is old cant, not modern slang. It is on record in London's underworld speech in the 1720s. A 1724 song uses it for food, and a 1725 cant dictionary defines it as a Reckoning at a Boozing-ken, the bill at a tavern. One etymologist treats that as the earliest sense, since the first recorded use refers to a reckoning at a tavern.
In Scots it is recorded from 1801 for food in general, especially odd or miscellaneous pieces, and London's street poor were asking for scran, meaning scraps, in the 1840s. So it was never only Scottish, only northern or only naval. The plain verb, to eat, is first cited in 1998.
Where it came from is unknown. A Norse source has been proposed and doubted. The acronym story is a later invention. In the 2020s the Footy Scran account, which posts football-ground food, gained more than 100,000 Twitter followers in a matter of months and carried the word to a new audience.
