What does wyo mean?
- 1.
What you on?: Asks what someone is up to or has planned, usually as a lead-in to making plans or checking whether they are free.
- 2.
The late-night version: Sent late to someone you're interested in, the same question can work as an invitation to meet up. That is tone, not a separate meaning.
- 3.
Not Wyoming: Wyo. with a full stop is an old abbreviation for Wyoming. The texting term is lowercase and usually ends in a question mark.
Wyo asks what you're on, meaning what you're up to and what's planned. It's a plans question. "Wyo tonight?" expects an answer like "nothing yet" or "food at 8, pull up."
It sits right next to wyd, and plenty of people use the two the same way. The difference is direction. Wyd asks about this moment and is often just small talk. Wyo leans toward what's next: your move, your plans, whether you're free. Wtw does a similar job for a whole group.
Timing sets the tone. From a friend on a Friday afternoon, it's logistics. From someone you've been talking to, late at night, it can be an invitation. Either way, the easy reply is what you're doing plus a question back.
One thing it doesn't mean in a text. Spelled out, "what are you on?" can be a jab that someone is acting strangely. Wyo isn't that. And in an address, Wyo. is Wyoming.
Where did wyo come from?
The exact origin is unclear. Wyo abbreviates "what you on?", a question that leaves out the "are." In African American Vernacular English, and in some Southern speech, that verb is often dropped. The phrase has the same shape, but no source documents where the abbreviation began.
It was in texts by July 2015, when a Reddit user asked what "wyo rn" meant. By March 2017 it was familiar enough to title a track, "W Y O (What You On)", on a Mike Will Made It album. It is recorded as an initialism of what you on, labelled UK and US text messaging, so it isn't only American. By early 2026 it drew 46,100 US searches a month in an analysis of the most searched texting acronyms in America.
