Yapping is one word doing two opposite jobs, and which one you get depends entirely on who it points at.

Sent outward at someone else, it is dismissive. "What is bro yapping about" throws out the talking and the point being made with it. The dictionaries that record this sense mark it disapproving, and that is the older reading. Turn it inward and the sting goes. People book yap sessions with friends, call themselves yapper girls, and post videos labelled yapping with obvious affection.

That flip is the interesting part and it happened fast. The reclaimed sense keeps the meaning exactly, talking a lot about not much, and drops the judgement. It sits alongside older words for the same habit. Yapper for a gossip has been in the slang dictionaries since 1903, which tells you people have needed this word for a while.

Yapping is far older than the app that made it loud, and the record holds a surprise. The verb is attested from 1596, and the earliest recorded sense is talking in a shrill insistent way. Barking comes second. So in the first written evidence the word is about people, not dogs. The root is imitative, which means the word was built to sound like the noise it names.

The "talks too much" reading was in print by 1823, in a dictionary of the racetrack and the boxing ring, with yapper for a gossip beside it. None of this is new. What is new is the volume. The word took off online in mid-2023, first as a way to poke fun at someone who talks a lot and to wave away their opinions. Collins then put yapping on its Word of the Year shortlist for 2024, the year brat won.

TikTok did not give the word this meaning. TikTok made everyone say it at once. The reference books have been slower. Most still stop at chatter and barking, or file the human sense as disapproving, which was the honest reading for two centuries and is now only half the story. What they miss is the warmth: the version where people book a yap sesh on purpose and call themselves yappers as a boast.
