What does brainrot mean?
- 1.
The content: Low-effort, mind-numbing internet content: endless short video, absurdist memes, algorithm slop. "My feed is pure brainrot tonight."
- 2.
The effect: The supposed mental mushiness from bingeing that content. This is the sense Oxford's 2024 definition centers, and it is not a real medical condition.
- 3.
In fandom: The affectionate older sense: an all-consuming obsession with a character, ship or game. "I have severe Kurapika brainrot" is a happy complaint, not a worry.
- 4.
The genre label: The umbrella name for the skibidi-era meme canon. That covers brainrot words, the "Italian brainrot" AI characters, and even "a brainrot" as a thing you collect in Roblox's Steal a Brainrot.
Brainrot means opposite things depending on who says it. Adults and headlines use it as a worry word about screen time and shrinking attention. The people actually scrolling use it as a cheeky self-own: calling your own feed brainrot is a guilty badge, not a confession of illness. In fandom it is warmer still, a way of saying a character has taken over your head, and the standard sympathetic reply is "same."
It is also the official name of an era. Oxford made "brain rot" its 2024 Word of the Year after usage jumped 230% in a year, and explicitly filed words like skibidi and Ohio under "brain rot language." Since then it has become a genre label too, covering the AI-generated "Italian brainrot" characters of 2025 and the Roblox games where kids collect brainrots by the dozen. Slang runs it together as one word; Oxford styles it as two.
Where did brainrot come from?
The first recorded use is from 1854. In Walden, Henry David Thoreau asked why England worked to cure the potato rot. Nobody, he wrote, tried to cure "the brain-rot, which prevails so much more widely and fatally." As internet slang it surfaced around 2007 with no known coiner. Back then it was aimed at trashy TV and being chronically online. Through the 2010s, fandom on Tumblr and Twitter used it as a fond word for character obsession. It spiked as a meme around 2020 on Discord. Then TikTok made it generational. Usage rose 230% between 2023 and 2024, and Oxford named it Word of the Year 2024 after a public vote of more than 37,000 people. The "Italian brainrot" AI-character wave of 2025 borrowed the existing word as its genre name, not the other way around.
