What does baddie mean?

  1. 1.

Confident and attractive: A person, most often a woman, who is attractive, polished and self-assured, and owns their look. Used as a compliment ("she's a baddie") and in phrases like "baddie era" and "baddie energy."

  2. 2.

Anyone who looks the part: By extension, an attractive, put-together person of any gender. A sharply dressed man can be called a baddie too.

  3. 3.

The villain: The older informal sense: the bad guy in a film, book or game, the opposite of a goodie. "The baddie in the film" means the villain, not a compliment.

A baddie has it together, and knows it. The look is polished: hair done, nails done, an outfit that was clearly chosen. The attitude matters just as much. A baddie isn't asking for approval. She walks into brunch like she's the reason it was booked.

It's a compliment, usually said about a friend, a celebrity or yourself. "She's a baddie" is praise. A "baddie era" is a glow-up phase, when someone is thriving and looking the part.

The Instagram baddie became its own aesthetic in the late 2010s: full glam makeup, lashes, long acrylics and bold fashion. Many of those trends were created or popularized by Black women, a point critics have made about how the look spread across the internet.

Two mix-ups come up. First, baddie also means a villain in ordinary English, so "the baddie in the movie" is not a compliment. Second, a baddie is close to the opposite of a pick me. A pick me performs for approval by knocking other women down. A baddie is self-assured and isn't performing for anyone. It pairs naturally with slay and face card, the words for someone who looks and acts the part.

Where did baddie come from?

Two words share the spelling. The villain sense is ordinary English, bad plus -ie, an Americanism dating back to 1935–40, with an earlier Australian use for an immoral person in 1901.

The compliment sense grows out of African American English, where bad has long meant good. That approving bad is originally in African-American vernacular, said to be heard since at least the 1890s and in print by 1928 in jazz writing. Baddie in its current sense is widely described as the softened, printable form of a profane compliment built on bad.

In the late 2010s the baddie became a recognized archetype: someone who looked good, got the bag and stood on business. The Instagram baddie look was a named subculture by 2019, and the reality show Baddies, created by Bad Girls Club alumnae Tanisha Thomas and Natalie Nunn, launched in 2021. Who first used baddie as a compliment is not documented.
