What does shawty mean?
- 1.
Girlfriend, crush: An affectionate name for a girlfriend, a crush or an attractive young woman, said to her ("hey shawty") or about her ("my shawty"). It's flirty, not a comment on height.
- 2.
Friendly address: A warm way to address a friend, a newcomer or a younger relative, with no romance intended. Girls use it with each other, and it is occasionally used for a boyfriend.
- 3.
She, her: In lyrics and texts, shawty can stand in for she or her: "shawty said she's outside."
- 4.
Short person: The source meaning of shorty, a short person. It is rarely what shawty means now.
Shawty is a term of affection with a Southern accent. Call someone shawty and you're calling them your girl, your crush, or just someone you think is cute. "My shawty" is a girlfriend. "Hey shawty" is a flirty hello. Nobody using it means she's short.
It's warmer and looser than bae. Bae almost always means your partner. Shawty can be a partner, a crush, a stranger you're flirting with, or a friend. Aunties in the South call their nieces shawty, girls call each other shawty, and now and then a girlfriend calls her boyfriend shawty.
Is it respectful? Mostly, yes. Said warmly by someone you know, it's a compliment. Shouted at a stranger on the street, the same word lands differently, the way "hey beautiful" does. The word isn't the problem. The context is.
Next to baddie, which rates someone's confidence and style, shawty is simply a way to call someone yours, or to flirt with them.
Where did shawty come from?
Shawty is shorty as it sounds without the r in Southern African American English. Shorty itself is old slang for a short person, and in Black American usage it had come to mean a young person by the 1930s. The sense of a woman or girlfriend, occasionally a boyfriend, is labelled originally Black American and cited from 1993.
Hip-hop carried it everywhere. A study of rap lyrics credits Southern hip-hop with the shawty spelling, with Lil Jon's 1997 use the earliest in its data. The spelling itself had turned up in 1940 Harlem print, in an unrelated sense. By 2007 three shawty songs were climbing the charts at once, and press coverage called the word a Southern derivation of "shorty". T-Pain said it came from Atlanta, as far as he knew. Who coined it, and exactly when, is unknown.

- Often the same affection, aimed at a crush or a boyfriend. Girls also call each other shawty as friends, the way they might say babe or girl.
- Can you call a boy shawty?
- Yes, though it's less common. It's recorded for boyfriends as well as girlfriends, and in the South it's used for younger relatives of any gender.
