What does chalant mean?

  1. 1.

Openly caring: Showing that you care instead of playing it cool: replying, making plans, saying how you feel. Used mostly about dating and partners: "a chalant man," "be chalant with me."

  2. 2.

The old joke word: For decades, a humorous opposite of nonchalant meaning careful or bothered, with no dating meaning. That is the sense older citations show.

  3. 3.

Visibly trying: Outside dating, someone who doesn't hide their effort or excitement. It can shade toward trying too hard.

Chalant is what you want from someone you like. A chalant person texts back, makes the plan, remembers your interview and calls after. They show interest instead of hiding it behind a cool act. "Be chalant with me" means stop pretending you don't care.

It only makes sense next to nonchalant. For a few years, acting nonchalant was the look: unbothered, slow to reply, never the first to say how you feel. Chalant is the correction. Dating profiles started asking for it by name, and the noun chalance, the quality of visible effort, came back with it.

Is it a real word? Yes and no. No standard dictionary lists it, because English borrowed nonchalant from French without ever having a positive form. People have been inventing chalant as a joke for decades. What's new is using it sincerely, as a compliment.

It isn't the same as being a simp or love bombing. A simp overdoes devotion that isn't returned, and love bombing is affection used to control. Chalant is steady, sincere effort in both directions. Outside dating it can carry a faint edge, closer to tryhard, for someone doing a lot.

Where did chalant come from?

Nonchalant came into English from French in 1734, built on chaloir, a verb meaning to have concern for. English took only the negative, so chalant is a back-formation: speakers strip the non- as if it were an English prefix. It was never a standard word. A language blog told a curious reader in 2010 that only the negative form of the word has found a home in English.

As a joke it is old. The noun chalance is in print by 1961. A 1994 humor piece built on words that exist only in the negative has its narrator walk into a party "very chalant". Novels used it from 2001 on.

The sincere dating sense is recent and collective. It answers the nonchalant persona that was popularized in Black online spaces in 2023 and spread on TikTok in 2024. By October 2025, magazine coverage described dating profiles asking for chalance and cited a 217 percent increase in search interest for chalant that year. No first user of the dating sense can be named.
