The word has stretched since its start with streamers. Younger speakers, Gen Alpha especially, now use it for general charm or cool factor, with no dating angle at all. They often use it as a joke. By 2026 rizz is fully mainstream. Dictionaries define it, brands put it in ads, and parents say it at dinner. That is exactly why the people who made it cool now use it half-jokingly. Everyone still understands it instantly.

Rizz surfaced through Twitch and YouTube streamer Kai Cenat and his friend group. Cenat was using it publicly by mid-2021. His streams turned it into a format, with rizz challenges and tutorials. TikTok carried it worldwide through 2022 and 2023, and Oxford crowned it the 2023 Word of the Year. Where the word comes from is genuinely contested. Oxford analyzes rizz as a rare middle clipping of "charisma," a shortening that keeps the middle of a longer word, like fridge from refrigerator. But Cenat himself rejects that story. He says the word came out of his circle and "just meant game." He also insists he didn't coin it alone. It grew out of Black streamer culture, and no earlier documented use has been verified.
