rizz is current: in active, unremarkable use. Safe to say right now.
What does rizz mean?
Rizz is what earlier generations called game. It means the skill of winning someone over by talking to them, with humor and relaxed confidence. Someone with rizz makes flirting look effortless. "Unspoken rizz" is the over-the-top meme version, attracting interest without saying a word. "W rizz" scores an attempt as a win, and "L rizz" marks it as a fumble.
The word has stretched since its start with streamers. Younger speakers, Gen Alpha especially, now use it for general charm or cool factor, with no dating angle at all. They often use it as a joke. By 2026 rizz is fully mainstream. Dictionaries define it, brands put it in ads, and parents say it at dinner. That is exactly why the people who made it cool now use it half-jokingly. Everyone still understands it instantly.
Where did rizz come from?
Rizz surfaced through Twitch and YouTube streamer Kai Cenat and his friend group. Cenat was using it publicly by mid-2021. His streams turned it into a format, with rizz challenges and tutorials. TikTok carried it worldwide through 2022 and 2023, and Oxford crowned it the 2023 Word of the Year. Where the word comes from is genuinely contested. Oxford analyzes rizz as a rare middle clipping of "charisma," a shortening that keeps the middle of a longer word, like fridge from refrigerator. But Cenat himself rejects that story. He says the word came out of his circle and "just meant game." He also insists he didn't coin it alone. It grew out of Black streamer culture, and no earlier documented use has been verified.

Gen Z Slang WordsDon't confuse rizz with
- peng
- Rizz is a skill: charm, timing, knowing what to say. Peng is a look. Praising someone’s rizz is about how they act; calling them peng is about how they appear.
- aura
- Rizz is flirting skill, aimed at someone you like. Aura is overall presence with no romance required. Huge aura with zero rizz is common, and a running joke.
Questions about rizz
- What does rizz mean in texting?
- Same as everywhere else: flirting skill or charm. "W rizz" means you handled a flirty exchange impressively, "L rizz" or "no rizz" means you fumbled it, and "rizz her up" means turn on the charm.
- Is rizz short for charisma?
- Dictionaries, including Oxford, say it comes from the middle of "charisma." But Kai Cenat, who popularized the word, flatly denies that. He says it simply meant "game" in his friend group. Both accounts are on the record, so the honest answer is that it's disputed.
- Is rizz still used in 2026?
- Yes, constantly, but it's now mainstream rather than the cool new thing. Gen Alpha uses it freely and adults understand it. The most online speakers say it half as a joke, not as a serious compliment.
