What does love bombing mean?
- 1.
The dating one: Overwhelming a new partner with praise, gifts, constant contact, and talk of destiny, far faster than the relationship has earned. The affection is a tool for control.
- 2.
The original one: Showering a potential recruit with instant warmth and belonging to draw them into a group. This is where the term started, in writing about cults.
Love bombing looks like the best start to a relationship you have ever had. The compliments never stop. The gifts arrive early and often. Within weeks there is talk of soulmates, moving in, forever. The problem is not the affection itself but its purpose: it moves too fast so you bond too fast, and once you are attached, the warmth becomes a lever.
Clinicians describe a cycle. The bombing phase builds intense attachment, then the affection is withdrawn or made conditional, and the person spends the rest of the relationship trying to earn back week one. That is the control the opening was buying.
The honest caution cuts both ways. An enthusiastic new partner is not automatically a manipulator, and psychologists writing about the term say the difference lies in response to boundaries. Enthusiasm respects a "slow down." Love bombing punishes it.
Where did love bombing come from?
This one is unusually well documented, with a twist worth getting right. The people doing it coined it, not their critics. In the 1970s, members of the Unification Church, nicknamed the Moonies, used "love bombing" as a proud term. It named the wall of warmth they aimed at new recruits. The founder, Sun Myung Moon, used the phrase himself in a 1978 speech.
The earliest print evidence is from 1976, in critical writing about that church. Cult researchers took the word up fast. By the late 1970s the psychologist Margaret Singer was using it for recruitment tactics, and she later carried it into court testimony.
The dating sense is the cult sense scaled down to two people. It spread through psychology media in the 2010s. The clinical edge survived the move: the word still names affection used as a tool.

Dating & Relationship Slang WordsQuestions about love bombing
- What does love bombing mean in slang?
- It means flooding a new partner with affection to gain control. The praise and gifts come fast. They build a strong bond quickly, and then the bond is used against you.
- How is love bombing different from being really into someone?
- The test is boundaries. Genuine enthusiasm can hear "slow down" and adjust. Love bombing punishes it, withdrawing affection until the boundary is given up.
- Where does the term love bombing come from?
- From the Unification Church in the 1970s. Its members used the term proudly for showering recruits with warmth. Critics picked it up, and the first print record is from 1976.
- What happens after the love bombing phase?
- Doctors describe a withdrawal phase. The affection fades or comes with strings attached. The person then works to win back the opening weeks, and that effort is the control.
- Is love bombing always deliberate?
- Not always. Some people repeat the pattern without a plan. Psychologists writing about it focus on the effect, intense attachment followed by control, rather than on intent.
