What does pog mean?
- 1.
Hype, awesome: An exclamation when something impressive happens ("POG!"), or an adjective meaning awesome ("that play was so pog"). Poggers and PogChamp are longer forms with the same meaning.
- 2.
A pog: As a noun, a word of praise in chat: "pogs in the chat." As a verb, to make the wide-eyed, open-mouthed shocked face.
- 3.
Not the toy, juice or military: Pogs are the 1990s milk-cap game, POG is a passionfruit, orange and guava juice, and a military POG is a non-combat service member. None of them is the Twitch word.
Pog is what chat types when something amazing happens. A streamer lands an impossible shot, a rare item drops, a last-second goal goes in, and the chat fills with POG. It's a cheer, a gasp and a thumbs-up in three letters.
It works as an adjective too. "That clutch was pog" means it was awesome. Poggers and PogChamp mean the same thing. They're longer forms from the same source. "Unpog," or "not pog," is the letdown version.
Parents often hear it without knowing where it comes from, and some explainers claim pog stands for "play of the game." It doesn't. That is a backronym, invented after the fact. Pog is short for PogChamp, a Twitch emote of a wide-eyed, open-mouthed face.
By 2026 it has a slightly dated feel, the way many 2020-era gaming words do. Streamers and gamers still use it, often with a wink. It pairs with clutch, which names the winning play, and gg, which ends the match. Pog is the reaction in between.
Where did pog come from?
Pog is a clipping of PogChamp, a Twitch emote. It showed the surprised face of Ryan "Gootecks" Gutierrez, a fighting-game personality, taken from a 2010 outtake for the Street Fighter show Cross Counter TV. The name came from a 2011 video called "Pogs Championship," in which he played the 1990s milk-cap game Pogs. By 2012, Twitch added the image to its global emotes, and it became chat's standard reaction to hype moments.
Longer and shorter forms followed. Poggers, a frog-faced emote submitted by Better Twitch TV in February 2017, spread alongside it. The bare word pog was in chat by 2020, though exactly when it split off is unclear.
In January 2021, Twitch banned the popular PogChamp emote after statements from the man pictured that the company said encouraged further violence following the US Capitol riot. Twitch said it wanted the word to live on, and a community vote later picked a new face for the emote. The word itself carries no politics.
