Oxford named rage bait its Word of the Year for 2025 and reported that its use had tripled in twelve months. The word is not new. 2025 was simply the year everyone learned to name the trick, and naming it is half the defense. Once you can spot rage bait, the cure is to scroll past.
Where did rage bait come from?
Rage bait is rage plus bait, built on the model of clickbait, which dates from the late 1990s. The earliest use Oxford's lexicographers found is a 2002 Usenet post. It described a driver being flashed by another driver who wanted to pass, so the first recorded rage bait happened on the road, not online. An Urban Dictionary entry dated December 2009 records the verb, "rage baited." A 2014 entry already describes a news site's post built to outrage as many people as possible. A Seattle newspaper column used it in 2015, and a 2016 blog post called the tactic "clickbait's evil twin." By 2019 The Atlantic and The New York Times were applying it to political media.
Rage farming came later. Researcher John Scott-Railton posted "you are being rage farmed" in January 2022, and Molly Jong-Fast carried the phrase into The Atlantic the same month. Oxford named rage bait its Word of the Year on December 1, 2025, after a public vote of more than 30,000 people. Aura farming and biohack were the other finalists. The 2024 winner had been brain rot.
