What does chud mean?
- 1.
Loser, jerk: The everyday insult: a lame, clueless or unpleasant person, usually a boy or man. Among friends it is often a light jab, closer to calling someone a loser than to real hostility.
- 2.
Doing nothing with your life: Said about yourself, it means stuck indoors with no plans and no progress. Students joke about a "chud summer" of gaming, snacks and staying home.
- 3.
The political insult: In online political arguments since the late 2010s, a left-leaning insult for a right-wing or reactionary man. Some on the right took it up as a label for themselves. Most kids using chud today mean none of this.
- 4.
The 1984 film: C.H.U.D. is a 1984 horror film about mutants living in New York's sewers. It is where the word comes from, but nobody using the slang means the film's acronym.
Chud is the insult of the moment. Call someone a chud and you are calling them a loser: lame, clueless, a little gross, the person nobody wants in their group project. It is almost always aimed at a boy or man, and among friends it lands as a jab rather than a declaration of war.
It also works as a self-own. "I'm such a chud" means you have done nothing with your day. Students talk about a chud summer: weeks of staying in, gaming, and eating cereal at 2 p.m. with no plans in sight.
The word carries baggage its youngest users may not know. For most of the last decade, chud was a political insult online, aimed by left-leaning posters at right-wing men. When kids say it now, they are usually just calling somebody a loser, not making a political point. Adults arguing online may still mean the older sense, so the context decides.
It sits near other put-downs. An npc seems scripted, a wasteman is useless, and a chud is the broader loser with a gross streak. Don't mix it up with chad, the confident, good-looking guy of meme culture. The two are opposites that happen to differ by one letter.
Where did chud come from?
Chud comes from the title of the 1984 horror film C.H.U.D., short for cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers, mutants living in New York's sewers. The monsters became shorthand for a gross, repellent person. US college slang already used chud to mean disgusting by 1989, and Usenet posts from the early 2000s use it for a gross person. Who first turned the title into an insult is unknown.
In the late 2010s it became a left-leaning online insult for brutish right-wing men. Credit for that use is often given to the podcast Chapo Trap House, whose 2017 episode title played on the word. It spread through political memes, and some on the right later took it up as a label for themselves.
By 2025 the political edge had worn off for younger users, who now use chud for any loser or jerk, and for themselves after an unproductive day. Google search data for January to August 2026 made it the second most-searched Gen Alpha slang term of the year, behind only 67.
