What does sigma mean?
- 1.
The compliment: A jokey word for someone cool, confident and independent. "He's so sigma" means he does his own thing and it works. Kids often drop it in as pure filler, for comic effect.
- 2.
"What the sigma?": An exclamation of surprise or disbelief, a Gen Alpha "what the heck." It comes from a viral March 2024 TikTok audio in a nasal voice that sounds like Squidward.
- 3.
Sigma male: The "lone wolf" rank in a made-up male hierarchy: a man who supposedly wins at life while staying outside the pecking order. Said sincerely in hustle-culture corners, mocked nearly everywhere else.
For the kids who actually say it, roughly ages 8 to 16, sigma is a compliment with a wink. It praises someone independent, confident and unbothered. Much of the time it means nothing at all: it gets chained with other joke words ("skibidi sigma"), aimed at pets, or dropped mid-sentence because the sound is funny. Most young speakers have no idea where the word came from, and linguists who study teen slang say it has fully left its old neighborhood.
That old neighborhood is the "sigma male" of hustle-culture content: grindset videos, stock-market edits, Patrick Bateman as the accidental mascot. That version is said with a straight face, and it is exactly what everyone else is mocking. An adult calling themselves sigma without the wink reads as either a joke about those videos or a warning sign.
Where did sigma come from?
Sigma was coined in January 2010 by Theodore Beale, a far-right American blogger who writes as Vox Day. He built a made-up ranking of men using Greek letters, with "sigma" as the lone wolf who wins without joining the group. The scheme presented itself as science; it is not. Researchers class the whole alpha-male idea as a myth, and reporters have documented that Beale's version treated contempt for women as a sigma trait. The word spent a decade in pickup-artist and red-pill forums, then went mainstream in January 2021 when a mocking tweet went viral and the parody "sigma grindset" meme wave followed. The hashtag passed 46 billion TikTok views by 2023. In March 2024 a TikTok audio changed it again. A voice message replying "Erm, what the sigma?", in a voice like Squidward's, became a Gen Alpha catchphrase. The absurd compliment sense took over from there.

Gen Z Slang WordsQuestions about sigma
- What does sigma mean in slang?
- From kids, it is a jokey compliment: cool, independent, does their own thing. Often it is just a funny filler word with no real meaning. The serious "sigma male" usage is older and widely mocked.
- What does "what the sigma" mean?
- It is a Gen Alpha way of saying "what the heck," an all-purpose reaction of surprise or disbelief. It took off in March 2024 from a viral TikTok audio in a voice that sounds like Squidward.
- Is sigma a compliment or an insult?
- From kids it is a compliment, or at least a friendly joke. Calling yourself a sigma with a straight face is different: most people read that as grindset-video behavior and laugh at it, not with it.
- Is the sigma male a real scientific idea?
- No. It comes from a 2010 blog ranking of men invented by a far-right writer, not from research. Scientists treat human "alpha" hierarchies as a myth, and the sigma rank was made up on top of that myth.
