What does zoomer mean?
- 1.
A member of Gen Z: Someone in Generation Z, usually defined as born from 1997 to about 2012. The name is a rhyme on boomer. Gen Z people often use it about themselves, with no edge at all.
- 2.
The teasing label: Said with an edge, zoomer paints young people as naive or too online. "OK zoomer" is the comeback to "OK boomer," flipping the brush-off back onto the young.
- 3.
Other zoomers: In Canada, Zoomer is also a media brand for people 45 and over, built on an older word for active baby boomers. Cambridge also lists a zoomer as someone using Zoom, the video-call app.
Zoomer is Gen Z's nickname, and the joke is in the rhyme. Baby boomers are boomers, so the generation named for the letter Z became zoomers. The label covers people born from 1997 to about 2012. Pew Research Center set the start year when it defined Gen Z as anyone born from 1997 onward, and 2012 is the end year most definitions use. In 2026 that makes zoomers roughly 13 to 29 years old.
The word started with a smirk. In 2018 and 2019 it was a meme label for teenagers, pinned to jokes about mumble rap and battle royale games. When "OK boomer" became the young generation's way to wave off older critics, "OK zoomer" came straight back the other way.
It didn't stay an insult. The word is now used more often as a neutral label than a jab, and Gen Z people use it about themselves without irony. Tone still depends on who is talking. From a peer, it's a label. From an older relative who won't listen, it can still be a brush-off.
The mirror image is unc. Zoomer marks you as young, unc marks you as old, and both are about attitude as much as a birth year. The words people link with zoomers, from brainrot to npc to delulu, have their own entries here. None of them are required to count as one.
Where did zoomer come from?
Zoomer blends boomer with the Z of Generation Z, and the Gen Z sense has been recorded since at least 2016. No single coiner is on record.
A meme gave it reach. In mid-2018, the first known thread featuring the Zoomer Wojak appeared on 4chan. The Wojak was a cartoon teen into mumble rap and battle royale games, drawn as a partner to an older "boomer" character. In late 2019, as "OK boomer" spread, critics answered with "OK zoomer," including a Spectator column that November. Bill Maher ran an "OK, Zoomer" segment on HBO in November 2021.
Dictionary.com added a slang entry in January 2020. Since then the word has drifted from jab to neutral label.
An older word shares the spelling. In 2000 the Canadian broadcaster Moses Znaimer coined Zoomer for baby boomers with zip, and his company ZoomerMedia still publishes Zoomer magazine for readers 45 and up. That sense has nothing to do with Gen Z.

Gen Z Slang WordsQuestions about zoomer
- What years are zoomers born?
- Usually 1997 to 2012. Pew Research Center set 1997 as Gen Z's first birth year. The end year isn't official, but 2012 is the common cutoff. In 2026 that makes zoomers roughly 13 to 29.
- Is a 25-year-old a zoomer?
- Yes. A 25-year-old in 2026 was born in 2000 or 2001, well inside the 1997 to 2012 range. Anyone born from 1997 onward counts, so zoomers now include people close to 30.
- Why is Gen Z called zoomers?
- It's a rhyme. Baby boomers are boomers, so Gen Z became zoomers, with a Z swapped in. The word has been recorded since at least 2016 and spread through memes in 2018 and 2019.
- Is zoomer an insult?
- It started as a teasing label and can still be one, especially as "OK zoomer." Most of the time now it's neutral, and plenty of Gen Z people call themselves zoomers. The tone and the speaker decide.
- What does OK zoomer mean?
- It's the comeback to "OK boomer." Where OK boomer waves off an older person as out of touch, OK zoomer waves off a young person as naive or too online. It appeared in late 2019.
- What's the difference between a zoomer and a boomer?
- A boomer is a baby boomer, born from 1946 to 1964, or anyone treated as out of touch. A zoomer is a member of Gen Z, born around 1997 to 2012. The names rhyme, but they sit at opposite ends of the age range.
